A $5.5m redevelopment of the Wendy Hucker Nursing Home at The Haven is well underway.
Work began in May this year and is due to be completed by the middle of 2010. The project is being built in stages and includes:
Stage 1: Construction of 33 new single rooms (including the dementia wing) on the southern side of the existing building. This stage also includes the construction of a covered linkway to the Nan Roberts Community Hostel.
Stage 2: Redevelopment of the of the existing Circle Wing. Prior to work starting residents will be transferred to the new rooms constructed as part of Stage 1.
Stage 3: Conversion of the South Wing wards to single rooms. During this stage residents will be transferred to the redeveloped Circle Wing. The Wendy Hucker Nursing Home, constructed in 1971, is a 60 bed facility consisting mainly of four and two bed wards. When the redevopment is completed it will consist of 44 single rooms with ensuites and eight two bed wards with ensuites. Meanwhile, The Haven has received accreditation to provide residential aged care for another three years. This follows a thorough site audit carried out by assessors from the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency at the end of June. The auditors looked at 44 areas of operation and found The Haven to be fully compliant.
Accreditation is about ensuring residential aged care homes meet a set of quality standards relating to the care provided to residents. These are set by the Australian Government.
In addition to the Wendy Hucker Nursing Home, The Haven also operates The Nan Roberts Community Hostel (caring for 67 residents), the 21 bed Fred Loudon Lodge (dementia unit), 16 community care places and self care independent units.
