Jean Byron is an example that you are never too old to learn.
A resident of the Nan Roberts Community Hostel at The Haven, Jean has recently enrolled in a program aimed at teaching senior Australian citizens computer and internet skills.
The Australian Government initiative is called “Broadband for Seniors” and has been developed and implemented by NEC Australia Pty Ltd.
The program aims to provide seniors with access to computers and the internet to teach them the basics of using this technology.
The Haven has installed two computer kiosks and a number of residents have taken up the opportunity to learn these skills.
Volunteer tutors have been arranged to assist. More volunteers are needed and anyone who can assist should contact The Haven on 6925 5500 The residents are especially enjoying card games designed to build their “mouse”, and “navigation” skills.
Jean has another motive in learning these skills. She has a daughter living in Florida in the United States.
These skills will enable her to cheaply and regularly communicate with her daughter.
Jean is learning how to use the internet to be able to community with her daughter who is living in the United States.
For further information contact Shane McMullen at The Haven on 6925 5500.
